What is a Passenger Van?

A passenger van for charter use — sometimes called a sprinter van — typically seats 12 to 15 passengers and is built on a commercial cargo-van chassis (Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, Chevrolet Express). Smaller, lower-cost, and more nimble than a mini bus, the van is the right vehicle when the group is small enough to fit and the trip is short enough that nobody needs to spread out. Importantly: every van we charter comes with a professional driver — there are no self-drive rentals in our fleet, because the federal rules and insurance economics don't favor that model for our use cases.

Best occasions for a Passenger Van

Airport transfers

Group of 6–14 from a hotel to the airport, or arriving guests from the airport to a wedding venue. Vans handle the luggage in the rear, fit at the standard airport pickup curbs, and avoid the per-vehicle Uber Black coordination of running 3 separate cars.

Bachelor / bachelorette day trips

Smaller pre-wedding outings of 8–12 people doing a winery tour or sporting event. Less elaborate than a party bus, much more comfortable than splitting into multiple cars, and the driver handles parking at every stop.

Family reunions and rehearsal dinner shuttles

Multi-generational family events where a single car cannot fit everyone, but bus-class capacity is overkill. Vans handle 12–15 passengers (toddlers count too if booster seats are coordinated in advance).

Business roadshows and client visits

A small executive team visiting 3–5 customer sites in a day across a metro area. The van keeps the team together, allows mid-trip discussion, and lets people work between stops. Common for sales kickoffs and field-office tours.

How a Passenger Van compares

A driven passenger van is at the smaller end of the charter spectrum. Compared to a mini bus, the van has fewer seats (max 15 vs 30), no overhead racks, and operates under different federal rules — vans 9–15 passengers fall under FMCSA's $1.5M BIPD requirement, while buses over 15 require $5M BIPD and CDL drivers. Compared to a stretch limousine, the van has more usable seating and luggage space at lower cost, but lacks the formal interior and aesthetic of a limo. Compared to a self-drive rental car (Avis, Enterprise), our driven van adds a professional driver, federal commercial insurance, and no parking/return logistics — the customer drops the keys at neither end. The right pick is van whenever the group is 14 or fewer and the priority is cost-efficiency over amenities.

How to choose the right passenger van

Confirm seat count vs your group

A "15-passenger" van in marketing is often 14 plus driver — confirm the actual passenger count when booking. We list the exact passenger capacity (excluding driver seat) on every unit listing.

Luggage space matters more than you think

12 passengers with single carry-ons: fine. 12 passengers with full-size suitcases: tight. The cargo zone behind the back row is roughly 4 large bags worth. For full luggage, ask about a 12-pax van where the back row is removed for cargo, or upgrade to a mini bus.

High-roof vs standard roof

Modern Sprinters come in high-roof and standard configurations; high-roof lets adults stand fully upright in the cabin. For trips with frequent stops (winery, brewery) high-roof is meaningfully more comfortable. We list roof height on each unit.

Booster and child seats

Federal commercial vehicle rules require child restraints same as private vehicles. Coordinate booster/child seats with us at booking — most operators provide them at small extra cost. Never assume child seats are pre-installed.

Driver always included

There is no "van rental without driver" path through us. Self-drive 15-passenger vans have a documented rollover-risk profile (NHTSA advisory) and many corporate clients prohibit them outright. Our quotes always include a CDL-or-equivalent driver.

Pricing

Driven van pricing in 2026 typically runs $70–$110/hour with 4-hour minimums. A 12-passenger van for a 6-hour day in a major metro lands in the $500–$700 range. Airport transfers are usually quoted as flat-rate trips ($150–$300 each way) rather than hourly. Vans are the lowest-cost option in our fleet by 30–50% compared to mini buses, which is why they're the right pick for group size at-or-under 14. See /pricing for the full breakdown.

Frequently asked questions

Passenger Van rental questions, answered honestly.

15 passengers including driver, so 14 paying passengers in most configurations. Some 15-passenger Sprinter vans seat 14 passengers + driver; some seat 15 passengers + driver. We confirm the exact passenger seat count on every unit listing.

Why Choose a Passenger Van

For groups under 14, a driven van is the simplest and most affordable charter option.

12–15 Passenger Capacity

Standard Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Chevy Express configurations. Bench seating, single-floor entry, easy luggage in rear cargo zone or behind the back row.

Faster Pickup Than a Bus

Vans use standard parking spaces and curbside pickup zones that buses cannot. No advance pickup-zone scouting, no waiting for the bus to maneuver — load and go.

Lowest Hourly Rate in the Fleet

Vans are the most cost-efficient option for groups of 8–14 going short distances. Avoids the overhead of bus-class CDL drivers and full-size insurance.

$1,500,000 BIPD Liability Insurance

Per FMCSA 49 CFR 387.33 for vehicles 9–15 passengers. USDOT-authorized operators. Drivers are licensed, drug-tested, MVR-verified — never a self-drive rental.
